The Nurse Healing Project™
Helping the Healers Heal
The Nurse Healing Project™ is a nurse-created wellness, education, and professional restoration initiative founded by Michelle L. McCrackin. Its mission is to support nurses who are experiencing burnout, compassion fatigue, moral distress, emotional exhaustion, and the often-unspoken challenges of caring for others while neglecting their own well-being.
The project was created around a powerful belief: Nurses deserve the same compassion, care, understanding, and support that they give to their patients every day.
Through education, guided reflection, storytelling, practical wellness tools, and supportive community experiences, The Nurse Healing Project helps nurses reconnect with themselves, rediscover their purpose, establish healthier boundaries, and create more sustainable personal and professional lives.
What the project offers
The Nurse Healing Project is designed as a growing collection of resources, programs, and experiences that support nurses throughout their careers.
The HEAL Method™: A four-part framework—Honor, Examine, Act, and Live—that helps nurses acknowledge their experiences, recognize what is draining them, take meaningful steps toward restoration, and build sustainable lives.
Nurse Recovery™: A structured approach to recognizing emotional exhaustion, releasing accumulated burdens, restoring well-being, reclaiming identity, and moving forward with intention.
Books, workbooks, and journals: Guided educational resources that encourage self-reflection, emotional awareness, personal growth, and healing.
Nurse Healing Circles: Supportive group experiences where nurses can share stories, reflect, connect, and feel less alone.
Workshops and speaking engagements: Educational presentations for nursing conferences, healthcare organizations, nursing schools, and professional groups.
Retreats and restoration experiences: Opportunities for nurses to step away from daily demands, reconnect with themselves, and experience renewal.
Healthcare partnerships: Programs designed to help hospitals and other healthcare organizations support nurse well-being, strengthen workplace culture, and recognize the importance of organizational responsibility.
Who the project serves
The Nurse Healing Project is intended for nurses at every stage of their professional journey, including nursing students, new graduates, experienced bedside nurses, nurse leaders, and nurses considering a career transition.
It also serves healthcare organizations seeking meaningful ways to support the emotional and professional well-being of their nursing workforce.
What makes it different
The Nurse Healing Project recognizes that nurse burnout is not simply an individual problem that can be solved through self-care alone.
Nurses also need supportive relationships, healthy work environments, compassionate leadership, and organizational change.
The project brings together three essential elements:
Individual healing
Helping nurses understand their experiences, care for themselves, and rebuild emotional resilience.
Community connection
Creating spaces where nurses feel heard, valued, supported, and understood.
Organizational responsibility
Encouraging healthcare institutions to create healthier and more sustainable nursing environments.
The project provides education, wellness resources, and peer support rather than clinical treatment, psychotherapy, or individualized medical care.
The larger vision
The long-term vision is to grow The Nurse Healing Project into a recognized nurse-wellness movement, with books, educational programs, facilitator training, retreats, hospital partnerships, community events, and resources accessible to nurses across the country.
It seeks to change the conversation from simply asking nurses to become more resilient to asking how the nursing profession can better care for the people who care for everyone else.
The heart of the mission
The Nurse Healing Project is about more than preventing burnout. It is about helping nurses find themselves again.
It is for the nurse who goes home exhausted but cannot sleep. The nurse who carries the memory of a patient they could not save. The nurse who has given so much to others that they no longer recognize themselves. And the nurse who still loves nursing but wonders how much longer they can continue.
The Nurse Healing Project™ exists to remind every nurse that their well-being matters, their experiences deserve acknowledgment, and they do not have to sacrifice themselves to be a good nurse.
Helping the Healers Heal—because the people who care for everyone else deserve to be cared for, too.
The HEAL Method is The Nurse Healing Project’s four-step practice for helping nurses pause, understand what they’re carrying, and choose a caring next step.
H — Honor your experience
Recognize your feelings and what you’ve been through. Exhaustion, grief, frustration, and pride all deserve acknowledgment.
“What am I carrying today?”
E — Examine what drains and sustains you
Look at what affects your well-being, including work conditions, home pressures, relationships, and support.
“What is wearing me down, and what helps restore me?”
A — Act with boundaries and support
Take one manageable step: ask for help, communicate a limit, make time for recovery, or connect with someone you trust.
“What do I need, and what is one step I can take?”
L — Live and work sustainably
Make room for rest, connection, joy, and the person you are beyond your nursing role.
“What can I protect or repeat so caring for myself becomes part of my life?”
For example: “That shift hurt. Missing breaks and feeling unsupported made it harder. I’ll ask for a debrief and help protecting my break. This week, I’ll make time to recover and reconnect with someone I love.”
HEAL is a nonclinical framework for reflection and practical support. It recognizes that nurses need both personal care and healthier working conditions.
Honor your experience. Examine your needs. Act with support. Live with room for yourself.
